How to Choose a Cat Carrier
Quick answer: for vet trips, choose a carrier that opens from the top and the front, is big enough for your cat to turn around, and has good ventilation. For walks and hands-free travel, a backpack. For tiny cats on short trips, a sling.
Carrier types
| Type | Best for | Watch out for | Our pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft foldable carrier | Vet visits, short trips, storage | Less protection in a crash | Foldable 3-Way Cat Carrier |
| Bubble backpack | Hands-free outings, curious cats | Clear domes heat up in sun | Clear Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack |
| Expandable backpack | Longer trips, more room to stretch | Bulkier | Expandable Mesh Carrier Backpack |
| Sling | Small cats, very short trips | Not for car travel | Pet Sling Carrier |
Sizing
Your cat should be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. Check the maximum weight on each product page and allow a margin.
Safety checklist
- ☐ Secure zips or latches (cats are escape artists)
- ☐ Internal leash clip for harness attachment
- ☐ Good airflow on at least two sides
- ☐ Waterproof, washable base
- ☐ Secure in the car: seatbelt through the handle or on the floor behind a seat
Make it a happy place
Leave the carrier out at home all the time with a blanket and the occasional treat inside. A carrier that only appears before the vet becomes the enemy.
