Window Perches 101: Safe, Sunny and Suction-Cup Strong
Quick answer: choose a perch rated well above your cat’s weight, mount it on clean, smooth glass, press every suction cup firmly, and re-check them weekly. South-facing and east-facing windows give the best sun without baking in summer.
Types of window perch
| Type | Best for | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid suction-cup shelf | Most cats, everyday use | Foldable Suction-Cup Window Perch |
| Soft hammock | Cats who love to sink in | Ultra-Soft Window Hammock |
| Strap-suspended | Large windows, two cats | Strap-Suspended Window Hammock |
| Sill-mounted shelf bed | Wide sills, older cats | Window Sill & Bedside Shelf Bed |
Mounting it safely
- Clean the glass with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol; dry completely.
- Warm the suction cups in your hands so they’re pliable.
- Press each cup firmly, pushing out all the air.
- Load-test with your hand, then your arm’s weight, before your cat jumps on.
- Mount at a height she can reach easily, with a chair or shelf below as a step for older cats.
Suction cups don’t hold on textured, frosted, cracked or coated glass, or on painted walls.
Keeping it safe
- Check and re-press cups weekly; temperature changes loosen them.
- In mid-summer, watch for overheating on sun-facing glass.
- Make sure windows are secure. A curious cat and an open window is a risky mix.
Why cats love them
Indoor cats need stimulation. Birds, people, cars and clouds are free entertainment, and sun-warmed sleep is a cat’s idea of luxury. Read more in The Indoor Cat Happiness Guide.
