How to Clean a Cat Water Fountain
Quick answer: once a week, unplug the fountain, take it apart, wash every part in warm soapy water (use a small brush on the pump), rinse well, and refill with fresh water. Replace the filter as the maker recommends, usually every 2–4 weeks.
Why it matters
Fountains recirculate water, so slime (biofilm), hair and food bits build up. A dirty fountain tastes worse to your cat and can harbour bacteria. A clean one encourages drinking.
Weekly clean: 10 minutes
- Unplug or switch off. For cordless fountains, remove or switch off the power unit first and keep it dry.
- Empty and dismantle: tank, lid, spout, filter and pump.
- Wash in warm water with unscented dish soap. Stainless steel parts can often go in the dishwasher.
- Clean the pump. Open the impeller cover and brush out hair and slime with a small brush or old toothbrush.
- Rinse thoroughly. Cats dislike soapy smells.
- Rinse the new or existing filter under the tap before refitting.
- Reassemble and refill with fresh water. Check the pump runs quietly.
Hard-water build-up
In hard-water areas, white scale builds up. Soak parts in a 50:50 mix of white vinegar and water for 20 minutes, scrub, and rinse very well. Using filtered water slows it down.
Daily habits
- Top up with fresh water.
- Glance at the water level window; a pump running dry is noisy and wears out.
Easier to clean
Stainless steel fountains don’t scratch or hold smells like plastic can, which makes weekly cleaning quicker.
